This is a single malt Scotch whisky from Caol Ila, distilled in 2012 and subsequently matured in a special Marsala cask. The bottling was produced by Spencer Collings as part of their 50th-anniversary edition.
Custom Marsala cask (filled with Marsala wine casks for extra complexity)
Non-chill filtered and natural colour (for greater flavour expression)
Islay – an island renowned for powerful, smoky whiskies.
This whisky is distinctly peaty.
Caol Ila traditionally uses peat-smoked malted barley, so you get a smoky peaty base with maritime (salty) influences typical of Islay whiskies.
Thanks to the Marsala cask maturation, this bottling often has a more complex character than standard Caol Ila:

Smoke and sea salt
Soft sweetness from Marsala (dried fruit, honey)
Palate
Peat / peat smoke present
Salty, almost BBQ-like notes
Sweet accents from Marsala casks and light spices
Finish
Medium to long, with smoke and sweet notes that linger
This combination of smoke, salt and Marsala influence makes it an intriguing dram for lovers of both peat and complex cask influences.
This bottling is particularly interesting if you enjoy smoky Islay whisky with an extra twist from wine cask influences. The Marsala finish gives it a different dimension to standard Caol Ila releases.
