Oban is one of the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland. The distillery opened in 1794. The port town that bears the same name has grown around it. It is one of the Single Malt Scotch whiskeys that combines the full, complex flavors of the Highlands with the peaty, maritime character of the islands. Oban owes its full, satisfying character to the long fermentation process. The small copper, lamp-shaped stills are among the smallest in Scotland. The liquor it distills is slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs and exposed outside to the salty sea air. This creates a characteristic deep taste. Oban 14 Year Old is a great combination of full sweetness and smoky dryness, with fruity notes of orange, pear and dried figs, hints of sea salt and notes of peat and smoke. It is best served neat, perhaps with a dash of water, in a tumbler.
