Citadelle was the first French gin distillery. In 1775, Louis the Sixteenth gave two founders the privilege of distilling gin in Dunkirk, a port city along a busy trade route. Now production is done in Cognac by Ferrand Distilleries. One uses an old recipe by ancient method in a copper Cognac Still over an open fire and distills three times in total. After infusion of the botanicals, the alcohol is distilled in small alambics charentais. Citadelle Gin is blended with 19 different herbs, including French juniper berries, Moroccan coriander, orange peel from Mexico, cardamom from India, liquorice from China, cubebe pepper from Java, French flavourings, Mediterranean fennel. Also Italian iris root, cinnamon from Sri Lanka, French violets, almond from Spain, cassia from Indochina, German angelica, grains of paradise from West Africa, Dutch cumin, nutmeg from India, Spanish lemon, star anise from France. In 2012, Citadelle won a double gold medal at ‘The Spirits Competition’. Citadelle gin is also perfect for use in cocktails. Elegant gin with great finesse.
