With its Octomore whisky series, Bruichladdich may well have the most peated whiskies ever produced. The Octomore 16.1 whisky is made from Scottish barley peated at over 100 PPM and matured in bourbon casks. How does this taste? Find out in this smoky review.
Every year, Bruichladdich releases a special series of whiskies from the Octomore Farm. This year it's the turn of Octomore 16, a series that officially only has three bottles, but will eventually have four.
The Octomore 16.1 kicks off the set with a “reference”. This whisky forms the basis for the other Octomore whiskies in the series. In concrete terms, this means anything but a boring whisky, but rather a nice basis from which to explore the rest.
This “reference” is distilled with Scottish Concerto barley smoked at 101.4 PPM (Parts per Million). The distillate is then matured for five years in first-fill bourbon casks and bottled at 59.3% ABV.
Sea spray and orchard fruit enveloped in delicate peat smoke. Floral notes of dried heather and chamomile, vanilla beans and roasted almonds, cedar wood, smoked paprika and iodine.
Soft peat smoke, salted caramel, honeydew melon and apricot. Malt sugar with cinnamon and star anise, sea salt, toffee and chocolate with coconut. Earthy minerality and lingering smoke.
Long with notes of peat smoke, black pepper, toffee and sea salt.
