The distillate has a distinctly maritime, mossy and fishy character, with an oily texture. The influence of the cask is evident in notes that lend this dram roundness and texture: vanilla, almond and spices.
Within the peated whisky segment, I would describe the Hearach as mildly peated, yet oily, maritime and traditional, with pronounced spices.
Nose
Moderately peaty, with a mossy, fishy and salty character. Some good old kipper, sea shells, peat moss. A hint of vanilla, orange blossom and orange peel, almond. Perhaps some cooked fruit.
Taste
Oily, with a good punch from the 46%. There is peat, mackerel, anchovies, olive oil, and again a touch of moss and saltiness. It has a roundness from malt, marzipan and a hint of vanilla cream, which provides balance. The fruit is more orange-driven. Finally, there are spices of gentian root and pepper. Very nice.
Finish
Lingering olive oil, anchovies in oil, moss, gentian root, marzipan and mixed stewed fruit.
