Described as the “backbone” of the series, 14.1 is malted to 128.9 ppm. Ppm stands for parts per million and is the measure that describes the phenol content of malted barley in whisky; essentially, ppm indicates how heavily peated a whisky is. Bottled at 59.6% alc., Octomore 14.1 was matured in first-fill ex-American bourbon casks. Light amber. Smoked vanilla, sweet caramel, and toffee notes open on the nose, with sooty smoke balanced by delicate coconut and slivered almonds. There is an unmistakable earthy smokiness and a hint of citrus, as the lemon meringue pie cuts through rich barbecue pork. Bright citrus, smoke, and a distinct minerality come through on the palate, followed by charred oak and beach fire. Toffee and creamy vanilla are balanced with the earthy smoke, with bright notes of pear, gooseberry, and green apple adding both clarity and depth. Roasted coffee, hints of clove and nutmeg come to the fore, with a soft hint of heather honey. Butterscotch and vanilla are balanced with Octomore's signature earthy peat smoke and a touch of salt mist, with burnt heather and gorse blossoms settling on the finish.
