The Ben Nevis Single Cask “Deerstalker” is a fairly rare, independent bottling from the Scottish Ben Nevis distillery, released as part of the Deerstalker range. Below is a detailed description of this whisky.
Batch size: approx. 315 bottles
Unchill-filtered & no colouring added
As this is a single cask, all the whisky comes from a single cask. This means that every bottle is unique and no two batches will taste exactly the same.
Fruity and slightly tropical (apple, peach, sometimes pineapple) Honeyed sweetness
Subtle ‘funky’ or slightly industrial note (characteristic of Ben Nevis)
Influence of the bourbon cask: vanilla and a hint of coconut
Full-bodied and oily mouthfeel, Sweet malt and honey, Ripe fruit (stone fruit, citrus)
Spicy wood notes (from the oak cask), Slightly salty/umami edge typical of the distillery
Ben Nevis is known for a powerful, somewhat robust and “old-school” profile combining fruitiness and earthy notes.
Finish
Medium to long, becoming drier, oak and spices, lingering fruity and slightly mineral notes
Character & impression
This Deerstalker bottling is generally regarded as:
Complex and full of character
Not typically “smooth”, but rather distinctive
Of interest to lovers of indie bottlings and authentic Highland style
The combination of long maturation (18 years) and bourbon casks results in a lovely balance between fruit, wood and the typical Ben Nevis profile.
