The Benromach distillery was founded in the late 19th century by Duncan Maccaullum. The distillery had a difficult start and was closed down on several occasions. After the First World War, the Benromach distillery was renamed Balmenach. Balmenach closed its doors again in 1930. In 1938, the distillery was taken over by Associated Scottish Distilleries. Benromach closed again in 1983 and was almost completely dismantled. In 1992, the buildings came into the hands of Gordon & MacPhail, who reopened the Benromach distillery in 1998. Bright straw yellow. Delicate peat smoke is accompanied by aromas of sweet vanilla, honey, matured beef, the fruitiness of apricot and lime, sugared almonds and a subtle hint of tobacco.
Distinct notes of peat smoke with plenty of fruitiness, notes of ripe strawberries, orange, pear, apple compote and grapefruit come through. Additional flavours come from ground black pepper, cocoa powder and hints of aniseed and cigar smoke.
The long and powerful finish has an excellent balance between fruity and smoky notes.
