Released as part of the Cask Exploration series, this Port Charlotte PMC: 01 is one of the distillery's most special bottlings to date. This 2013 vintage is the very first release in which Port Charlotte spirit has matured in Pomerol barrels. Home to some of the best and most sought-after red wines in the world, Pomerol is the smallest of all the major Bordeaux wine appellations. The versatile Port Charlotte spirit is deeply influenced by the flavor of oak, with notes of blackcurrant, plum and aged leather. Barley Origin: Scottish Concerto barley. Heavily peated. Distilled in 2013. Age: 9 years old. Maturation profile: First filled in first-fill Bourbon barrels in 2013 and aged for 4 years. In 2017 the spirit was put back into Pomerol barrels and aged for the next 5 years. Warm peat smoke and red fruits open on the nose, transitioning into stewed pears, melon and a subtle marine note. Delicate floral notes of rose and geranium follow, with hints of vanilla, honey, leather and toasted oak emanating from the wood. As the spirit opens further, a subtle spice blend of cloves and ginger emerges, with a hint of marzipan. Malt sugar and peat smoke complement the enormous viscosity of the liquid that covers the palate. The influence of the barrel continues, showing the harmonious balance of oak and fruit, with juicy blackberries, plums and old leather. Soft marine notes, crushed shells and a hint of citrus lemon peel hint at the single malt's full Islay maturation, while Port Charlotte's signature peat smoke lingers.
