Podere Don Cataldo is one of Rocca's wineries in Leverano, near Lecce. For a long time, this winery was only there for the production of wine. A few years ago, Rocca started to convert this winery into a combination of winery and resort, which now gives it more allure than ever. Rocca has decided to set up a completely new line from the 2020 wine year, named after the Podere, with new wines of superior quality.
The Nero di Troia is a very old grape variety with low yields in the northwestern part of Puglia. According to tradition, it has been present there since the Greek colonization (5th century BC). Most vineyards with the nero di troia are located on the slopes surrounding the historic Castel del Monte. This fantastic full, but also soft red wine is partly aged in large barrels of Slavonian oak.
It has a deep ruby red color, almost opaque and has a complex but attractive nose with ripe blackcurrants and raspberries, with accents of leather, undergrowth and sweet spices such as cinnamon and vanilla.
The taste is full, deep, soft and warm. This Nero di Troia combines well with game, stews and grilled vegetables. Preferably serve it at around 18°C.
