About the winery Alsace today is particularly versatile and progressive. With countless different terroirs, the royal variety Riesling and a pioneering role in organic viticulture, Alsace is now a very exciting wine region. The slightly sweet style of the past is on its way out: more and more winemakers are making completely dry wines that give a purer expression of the grape varieties. This also applies to Fernand Engel, where very modern wines are made. Engel's wines can absolutely compete with the best wineries from the Haut-Rhin. Vineyard and region Sourced from four plots in Rorschwihr and three in Orschwiller, both near Colmar in Alsace. The soils at Rorschwihr have a dark, calcareous soil with a lot of clay and sand. They are located on a gentle slope and face east and southeast. The plots at Orschwiller are calcareous with silt, sand, clay and 15 to 20% granite. They have a slight slope and are oriented to the east and south. The vines are 10, 15, 18 and 20 years old. Vinification The Crémant d'Alsace is made according to the same method as Champagne; the method traditionnelle. The wine undergoes a second fermentation and maturation of 18 months, which gives the wine a refined bubble. Color Lemon Yellow. Scent Citrus, lemon, grapefruit, bread, slightly smoky. Taste Fresh attack, balanced acidity and bubbles that provide a creamy touch. Serve at Lekker as an aperitif. Also delicious with apple or pear tarte tatin. Awards "Herbs, white pepper, pear, apple. Rins, good acidity, good mousse." - Press wine "Sliced green papaya, green mongooses and apple pie. Medium body, lots of bright citrus character and a zesty finish." - 90 points, James Suckling on the 2017 vintage
