The terroir of Château l'Argentier, stretching over a hill of clay and limestone and oriented east-west, is characterised by soils of fine red earth, rich in flint and iron and endowed with good acidity. Very good drainage allows the vine to take deep roots. Located 25 kilometres from the coast, the vineyard is influenced by a typical Mediterranean climate .
The 24-hectare vineyard of Château l'Argentier is mainly planted with Mediterranean grape varieties ( Cinsault , Carignan , Aramon , Grenache , Syrah and Mourvèdre ). The average age of the vines is 40 years. The oldest vine on the estate is a 2.25-hectare plot of Carignan, planted in 1935.
The vines are cultivated with respect for the soil. Regular ploughing , addition of organic matter when needed, balanced pruning and natural grass are the foundations of how this vineyard is managed.
Manual harvesting takes place only when the berries have reached their full polyphenolic ripeness. Vine yields vary from 15 to 35 hectolitres per hectare depending on the vintage and plots.
